Counselling generally looks backwards and walks you through a process that analyses your past in order to understand where you are today. Counsellors are trained in different psychological theories and counselling techniques. The role of a counsellor is therapeutic but the role of a coach is not. Therapy deals with healing pain, dysfunction and conflict within an individual or in relationships.
Coaching is a process that facilitates forward thinking, increased self-awareness and momentum to take action. The coach meets the client where they are and uses a range of techniques and tools designed to empower the client to move towards a goal that they themselves have set. The coaching process naturally releases blocked emotions and can feel very therapeutic. However, the primary focus is on creating actionable strategies for achieving specific goals. In a coaching relationship the emphasis is on action, accountability and follow through.
A mentor will often give advice, training and general support to their mentee. Mentors tend to share what they have learned and experienced with their mentee to help guide them.
The role of a coach is not to teach their client or to give advice. A coach won't filter what a client brings to the sessions through their own methods of thinking, being, learning and creating. They are trained to meet the client where they are and remain focused on the coaching relationship and client's agenda.
We use a free on-line meeting application for coaching sessions so you can be based anywhere in the world.
Typically every two weeks. This allows adequate time for reflection, as each session will trigger deeper thinking, learning, and discovery. It also allows sufficient time for the client to complete actions. That said, it depends on what works for you so this isn't set in stone, just here as a guide.
At the end of each session you will design and commit to actions with the support of your coach. These will be carefully considered tasks to move you forward. It's also possible that you'll have on-going tasks such as journaling around a particular topic or theme over a period of time.
You have complete freedom to pause or stop the coaching process at any time.
However, it's worth noting that growth can be uncomfortable and sometimes we're not even aware when we're on the cusp of a huge shift. Think caterpillar - chrysalis - butterfly. Research suggests it's not uncommon for clients to back away at this point, which is a real shame. Making a commitment to a coaching programme will hold you through that challenging time and support you in achieving what you signed up to achieve.
If you decide coaching isn't for you for any reason, that's OK too. I intend to give you as much information and insight as I can, the choice and commitment is yours to make.

This varies from person to person. A good coach won't want you to become dependent on them and will encourage you to use tools and techniques independently.
My coaching programmes are typically between 3-12 months.
Some clients choose to work with a coach on an on-going basis. If they're embarking on a big change like starting a business for example; or if they've chosen a lifestyle that involves constant change and they benefit from regular coaching sessions. It's not one size fits all, it's a process that will be different for each individual.
One off sessions with a clear objective can also be very powerful but the real magic happens over time.
